The restaurant has a quaint & romantic atmosphere enhanced by a lovely open fire, however we were very disappointed to be shown to a very small table adjacent to the only other occupied table. Floor space is quite restricted and tables are separated by only about 30cm and a brick column in the wall made the bench seat uncomfortable. The surly demeanor of the staff discouraged us asking for a different table! Before we were even seated, due to the limited access, we were given menus & a carafe of table water and very quickly asked for a drinks order and before we had had any chance to peruse the menu we were rushed again to give a food order. In the end the food was good but the pressured hospitality did spoil the overall experience.

Its been there since 1681 so its a bit wonky, which i loved. We had a nice room right on the top floor, lots of stairs! WiFi didnt work up there but not too bothered. We ate in restaurant which was really nice

Very dissapointed. No toiletries or milk in out room. Velux window broken, allowing for draughts into the room. This was made worse by the fact there was a storm. We had to stuff towels round window. Room looked grubby, bathroom floor needed a good scrub. Lots of dust too. Breakfast not great, a bacon sandwich was 2 not soft pieces of bread and 2 small pieces of bacon.

My family and i booked a beautiful stay in Whitby in April Cottage, owned and booked through the White Horse & Griffin pub in the centre of the old part of Whitby. We were greeted by Cameron, who escorted us to the cottage, built in the 1700's and welcomed us inside. This is a spacious 3 bedroomed property and for its age, it is packed full of modern stuff - decent wifi for the kids tablets, amazing central heating for the blue-blooded, well stocked kitchen and a real fire complete with everything you need to get it lit on the really cold days! We couldnt fault the cleanliness and all the bedding, towels etc were clean and fresh. 10/10 for the comfy beds btw! If theres a downside it would be the lack of on-site parking although thats a tiny price to pay with a car park and on street parking nearby. Also theres quite a few steps leading up the hill to the property which will be a problem for anyone with mobility issues but once in, its worth every step. Overall this is a hidden gem tucked away behind a very historic pub and we cant wait to rebook. Many thanks to Cameron and staff at the White Horse & Griffin for the great service!

steeped in history and Whispers of Ghosts, the White Horse and Griffin Pub captures the very soul of Whitby old world charm. The flicker of candlelight on stone walls set the scene for a romantic glass of prosecco and sharing a few Oysters fresh as the sea air! this historic inn wraps you up in its timeless embrace

Fantastic hotel, very old fashioned. But the main pain being, I have NEVER stayed in such a cold place. Although it was in September, the wind made it exceptionally cold. No heating whatsoever and no hot water in the taps or shower. Never coming here again.

We chose this hotel based on its history and close proximity to the centre of town. The building is a fascinating place, and due to its age is quirky and not the sterile surroundings of a chain! Our room was lovely, single bed in a separate area giving the occupant privacy from the main room. Bathroom is modern and clean. Room and common areas are clean and inviting. Despite being in the centre of town we heard little noise apart from the seagulls which you expect when so close to the harbour. The staff are lovely and attentive. Breakfast was amazing although could have done with a bigger coffee cup for my first caffeine shot of the day! The hotel is priced comparable to similar in the area, and I would say is good value for money. The only negative for me was the lack of choice with the inroom tea / coffee tray and there was no milk.

Just returned from a night in the discovery family room. Lovely big room for a family of 4 with so much potential let down by the upkeep. Double mattress needs replacing, feels like it has been slept on by one person for a while as we just kept rolling into the middle. Bedding was really clean, nice white cotton sheets. Damp, flakey paint coming off in bathroom and inside cupboard/wardrobe. Fire place flue blocked with carrier bags. One of the windows/skyights has a sign on warning you not to open it as it will fall off. (Not a major issue for ventilation as there is another 2 windows) however if you have these issues with the room just dont rent it out untill it's fixed. Gorgeous breakfast! Could do with sofas being refilled and a bigger TV for the size of the room also. Having to request jugs of milk isn't ideal either (Especially when they dont actually arrive) UHT would be better than none at all.

We only popped in for beers and the narrow bar area is clearly part of a very old property and a little draughty but the barmaid was very friendly and the Timmy T's beer very nice. The dining area looked very cosy through the back area.

A fabulous place to visit if you want that feel of old Whitby. Located in the old part of town, this strange but extremely interesting Inn is definitely a must to visit. The bar area is small, and the restaurant not much larger, however they have a great system in place, so as to get you seated and served. We had the Sunday roast, and it didn’t disappoint. £18 a head for roast beef and all the trimmings. The wine choice was also good, and considering where you are, reasonably priced.
